Korean Foreign Language Translation and Notation Handbook

Have you ever thought about the following when you need to translate it into English?

Is the soup/soup/stew stew or soup?
Is the bedbug cake a pancake or a rice cake
Should I express it as old jelly?

Through several posts, I shared my concerns about food translation with you.

Maybe when expressing from Korean to English and from English to Korean Because there is no clear standard for Korean food labeling‍

I think I found it difficult to communicate with foreigners about Korean food.

To help you in this situation, I would like to introduce the standards and examples of Korean translation specified by the Korea Tourism Organization.

‍

In the summer of 2021, through public-private collaboration between Korea Tourism Organization and various private sector experts <Korean Foreign Language Translation Guide> has been compiled Based on existing dictionaries of foreign language notation and the National Institute of Korean Language's foreign language notation standards, with the participation of professional faculty and supervision of foreign advisors familiar with Korean culture”Food name foreign language translation standards” was published.

‍

The biggest feature of this notation standardIt is significant that it is written so that even foreigners who have a poor understanding of Korean food culture can easily understand it. It is said that they paid a lot of attention to whether it is OK to translate scientific names as they are, whether food names with Chinese characters are appropriate for translation, and to reflect ingredients, recipes, and flavor characteristics unique to Korean food rather than mechanical translation so as not to cause misunderstandings due to cultural differences.

‍

Also, it is said that words that are already known overseas as their Korean names or are listed in the Oxford English Dictionary and need to be preserved are described by using the Korean language as it is, and explanations are added. Based on this, I'll look at a post about how to translate and classify soup/soup/stew/hot pot, etc., which are often confused. We've also prepared a simple quiz for each menu, so I hope you get the right insight into “Korean English Translation”!
