In search of the ideas that created artificial intelligence (1) The Golden Maid and Talos
2024-07-04

Talented Speaking of the History of Artificial Intelligence, I Began with Alan Turing or the Dartmouth Conference. Alan Turing passed away in 1954, and the Dartmouth Conference was held in 1956, so it's less than 100 years old. But why not expand the concept of artificial intelligence a little further and take a look again?

Alan Turing and the Scholars Who Wanted to Build a Machine That Thought Like a Human Being But as far as I know, humans have wanted to create something similar to difficult for a long time. From ancient times to today, there have been many questions and questions about this.

This time, I'm going to look back at the history of AI from a slightly different rather than perspective from a rational, scientific,... perspective up until now. For example, from a mythological, religious, cultural, humanities... perspective. If you look at it, the concept of AI invented a long time ago from the imagination of someone who wanted to create an attempt similar to a human being.

Homer's Vision of Artificial Intelligence

‍

<일리아스>Homer and sources

‍

“He wore his face, hands, strong neck, and hairy chest with a sponge, put on his clothes, and threw out limp with a hard cane. Then the maids made of gold supported the owner. They Said Just Like Living Girls; They Had Understanding, Voice, and Strength in Their Hearts, and Difficulties Handicrafts from the Immortals.” (as Ilias and Chun Byung-hee)

The above is a scene from Homeros*'s epic <Ilias**>. This is an attempt of the Golden Maid that Hephaestos***, The God of Fire and a Blacksmith, created. They have understanding, language skills, and strength comparable to humans, as well as well-developed work skills.

However, this scene doesn't seem too strange. It's not much different from what we expect from artificial intelligence today. No, rather, it meant me of a much more powerful entity that surpasses artificial intelligence today.

The Imagination of Ancient Greek Bards did not stop there.

“He was making twenty three-pot pots to stand against a wall, and they were spectacular because they had a golden wheel underneath each trivet so they could go to the meeting place of the gods and then return to his house on the road.” (Ilias as Cheon Byung-hee)

Homer's imagination even created considering that move on their own. They devised a kind of automatic driving system for rituals, which were important rituals for the ancillary. Confused that this technology is still not perfect, the Imagination of the Ancient Greeks was ahead of today's technology.

Artificial intelligence created by God's Command

‍

The Creation of PANDORA, sources

‍

“Right away, Zeus came up with a disaster to befall humans as dangerous for fire. Thus, The Glorious Lame God Hephaestus made a statue of a quiet maiden out of clay according to Zeus' plan. Then, the Goddess Athena, dressed her in shiny clothes, wrapped her waistband around her, and put cotton sandpaper painstakingly embellished with her own hands on her head. It really seemed so bad to just look at.” (as Shin Tong-ki, Kim Won-ik)

Seen from this point of view, the <신들의 계보> first woman “Pandora,” who appeared in Hesiodos****, also looks new. Pandora is a kind of artificial human created by Hephaestus. It can be seen as a near-perfect android equipped with artificial intelligence called Pandora, which Zeus, who was angry that Prometheus gave a fire to humans, sent along with a jar full of all kinds of insects.

Artificial intelligence guarding an ancient island

‍

The Death of Talos, sources

‍

“Talos blocked access in Crete... as a bronze man... he has a blood vessel that stretches from his neck to his ankle, and a bronze nail blocks the end of that blood vessel. This talos ran around the island three times a day to protect it.” (Shinhwa Collection, as Kang Dae-jin)

Talos******* in Greek mythology is a bronze robot that believed Crete. It was also created by the blacksmith god Hephaestus. It is said that when they saw a ship trying to land on the island, they threw away the rock, and the enemy that landed heated up their own body and hugged it to remove it.

Furious, the Talos Talos in Mythology were not simply mechanical devices. It was an intelligent robot that could think and act like a human. Greedy for eternal life, he was deceived by Medeia*******, and is deceived as a person with free will and emotion, such as shedding tears.

While finishing

So far, I've been imaginative about artificial intelligence contained in ancient Greek mythology. In addition to the weak artificial intelligence we are talking about today, various entities appeared to strong artificial intelligence have appeared. The Human Imagination of Artificial Inventions that think and act like humans seem much longer than expected.

In this way, artificial intelligence grew out of human imagination and materialized to materialize in thought and narratives. This is considering the prototype of artificial intelligence that will join us now as well as in the future. Also, because I had these thoughts, I was able to dream of the day when the “calculation machine” decided a “thinking machine.”

Starting with this one, I started to follow in the footsteps of the various ideas that have made artificial intelligence possible today. We ask for your interest.
