MC: Where and how can I get translation jobs? Also, what if you could teach them to use translators? Hallo This is written by MC who was in charge of hosting.
I would like to ask the translator a variety of questions on your behalf. (Especially for content related to additional income. hehe) The person next to me is QM, the translator in charge. Please introduce yourself.
Translator Choi Kyu-dong (hereafter QM): Hello, my name is Choi Kyu-dong and I work as a QM for a translation platform company. Currently, I am in charge of the NIA project.
Q. NIA project?
MC: Yes, nice to meet you, translator. But what is the NIA project? I'd like to ask for an explanation.
QM: NIA is an abbreviation for National Information Society Agency. <한국지능정보사회진흥원>It's a national agency called. We have been running the NIA project since 2019, and this year we have been running it for 3 years. Our own know-how is being built up. Also, I know that a larger national budget has been allocated for 2022, so I'm preparing even more.
Q. Pursuing social values?
MC: It's a project between a national agency called NIA and Twigfarm. What do you think the NIA also pursues values for the socially disadvantaged?
QM: We are seeking values to promote employment for women with career breaks, young people who have trouble getting a job, and members classified as socially disadvantaged, such as people with disabilities.
Therefore, when recruiting workers at Twig Farm, we consider these standards first and proceed with recruitment.
Q. Do you make translators like Google Papago?
MC: From what the translator said, it seems a little different from a typical translation company. Also, you mentioned that it's a translation platform company. What does this have to do with NIA?
QM: When you think of a translation company, you think of getting assigned translation work and delivering translation results, right? The reason I mentioned this is a translation platform is because you know Google or Papago Translator very well, right? I told you it's a translation platform because it's a company that makes its own translators. Google Papago isn't the only one.
Q. Potential development of translators
MC: Wouldn't it be a big hit if Google and Papago could cross the Great Mountains? So how will translators develop in the future? Do you think there's room?
QM: Looking around me, there are many people who say that the translation quality of Google and Papago translators has been upgraded compared to last year. That's because that happens when the amount of corpus called TM (Translation Memory) becomes huge. As translations become more sophisticated and accurate, the quality of the translator increases. The NIA project we are participating in is a national-level corpus construction project, and we are gradually accumulating data as we build up.
Q. Crowdworkers with the NIA Project
MC: The concept of learning a machine translator itself is unfamiliar. I thought it was translated by just pressing Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, but that was all the result of accumulating data.
There is a lot of talk about the concept of crowdwalkers these days, but is it related to the NIA project to build a corpus?
QM: Yes, a corpus building project usually takes place in 4 stages. The original text is collected, the collected original text is refined, translated, and the translated content is checked. There are people who take charge of this process step by step. We call them crowdworkers. Crowd crowds are crowds, right? I think it would be nice to think of it as not just one person, but many people who split a huge amount of data and process it as a way to defeat each one.
Q. How much does a crowdworker earn?
MC: From what I've heard, I think it would be helpful (in terms of income) for freelance translators? How much profit will I make if I work as a crowdworker translators? What if you just mention it a little bit?
QM: Isn't that a bit of a sensitive question? ... Hehe, that's fine. I'll tell you an example of an English refinement inspection work standard that was carried out for 2 weeks. Please consider that the unit cost was relatively high because it was necessary to process a large amount of data in a short period of time. The task was to read an English PDF file with a character recognition program and the workers refined the content.
. There are usually about 30 to 100 crowdworkers working on a project, but for the project I was in charge of, I selected people with good skills and carried out with 10 people.
From college students to housewives and office workers, there were a variety of people in their 20s to 50s who could make use of their leisure time. Among them, office workers were the ones who earned the most income by using their evening time and two days on the weekend after work.
Q. So how much is the income?
MC: So how much additional income did he make?!
QM: It's 2.2 million won for 2 weeks. Hehe, but the part you shouldn't misunderstand is that if you are an office worker, you can remember that there were no weekends for 2 weeks.
I also remember a housewife who had children. Her child was at daycare, and she was only able to spend time until her husband left work. I remember that they took 1.4 million won for doing that. There were also college students. I think they took a profit of about 900,000 won because they only did it during the period before the final exam.
Q. When is the recruitment process?
MC: You told me so bluntly and in detail, right?
From what I've heard, it seems like anyone can do it, but no one can do it. I think there must also be sincerity and a sense of responsibility. The biggest advantage is that if you want to earn a lot of extra income in the time you want, I think it's worth participating. So are crowdworkers always recruited?
QM: There is an in-house recruitment manager, and they are hiring by posting job postings on job search portals such as JOB KOREA and Human Inn. For each of the four-step processes I mentioned at the beginning, we are hiring when needed for each project, so please stay tuned. (Not always, but I'll tell you often.)
Q. The gig economy era and crowdworkers
MC: It's commonly referred to as the gig economy era these days, right? That's why I think the crowdworker concept is more popular. Translator, please give me one last word.
QM: I am reminded of this comment written by a woman with a career break. “Crowdwalker is just the beginning.” It was said that I had a career again through crowdwalker, and I would like to suggest that crowdwalker would be a good start.
