Which translation is suitable for artificial intelligence (AI)?
2024-10-11

The other day, I introduced two fields of translation representing both troupes in the vast world of translation under the theme of “technical translation vs. creative translation.” In particular, I explained that since the characteristics of the two fields are so different, it is necessary to request an expert that matches the characteristics of the document even when entrusting translation.

Now let's take a look at what kind of translation artificial intelligence (AI) is more suitable for than human translators.

 인공지능 (Artificial Intelligence)

AI has an excellent memory capacity that never forgets what it has learned. Although it has such powerful performance that cannot be compared to humans, even so, there are fields where AI still cannot match humans. As many of you may have already noticed, this is a work related to “creation.” In order to “create,” it is necessary to have a deep understanding of unique areas unique to humans, such as “emotion,” and although AI is developing at an astonishing rate, it seems that it has not reached that level yet.

Therefore, it may still be impossible to entrust “creative translation” to AI, but instead, AI can be of great help in “technical translation” based on excellent memory and learning ability.
Let's take a look at how translation using AI can help companies that generally have a high demand for 'technical translation'.

For companies operating in overseas markets or planning to expand overseas, translation work is essential. Specifically, translation of various documents such as patent applications, contracts, product manuals, service descriptions, and technical materials is required. Also, in order to translate these corporate documents, the following two things must be considered.

First, it's 'technical term'. To properly translate special documents, such as patents, laws, science, and technology, you must have expertise in the relevant field. Special care must be taken because the technical terms used in each field are different, and even the same words can have different meanings and uses depending on each field.

Second, it's a 'proper noun. ' Most companies have an identity such as customs and culture unique to the organization, and as a result, there are often unique terms used only by that company. In particular, terms used in mission names, brand names, members' names or titles, and marketing phrases must be consistent even when translated. As a simple example, this is why the company “APPLE” should not be translated as “apple.”

If you let AI learn these two important points in advance, you can create a very powerful customized AI translator. More specifically, it uses a method of creating and using a “Translation Dictionary (Translation Dictionary)” containing “technical terms” and “proper nouns” that are repeatedly included in documents as a way to learn AI.

In other words, by using AI learned with an appropriate “translation dictionary,” it is possible to make customized translations “only for me” or “for our company.” By using a customized AI translator prepared in advance for 'technical translation' required by companies, it is possible to produce remarkable results with excellent improvements in the consistency and quality of translation.
